A touring ute can look ready for anything and still be badly packed. One hard stop on a corrugated road, one rushed camp setup, or one recovery where the straps are buried under food boxes quickly exposes the weak points. Quality drawer systems also give equipment a protected home and help prevent heavy items from sliding around.

The trade-off is weight and lost flexibility. A fixed drawer system takes up a large part of the tray and may not suit a ute that works during the week, carries motorcycles on weekends or needs to move bulky materials. If your load changes regularly, a configurable canopy setup with tie-down points, removable crates and a well-positioned toolbox may make more sense.

Toolboxes are ideal for keeping tools, consumables and dirty equipment separate from food and bedding. Look for strong latches, weather sealing and mounting that suits the tray or canopy structure. A badly mounted box can crack mounting points, rattle constantly and place stress where it should not be.
